Thanksgiving is one of the busiest driving weeks of the year. AAA counted about 82 million Americans traveling over the 2025 holiday, nearly 90% of them by car, and it answered close to 600,000 roadside calls over the previous year’s holiday. The top reasons are the boring ones: dead batteries, flat tires and empty tanks. If you’re leaving West Houston for Dallas, San Antonio, Austin or the Hill Country, most of those calls are avoidable. Here’s the pre-trip check our Briar Forest techs run, what you can check yourself in the driveway, and when to book so there’s time to fix anything we find.
- Book about a week ahead, not the day before you leave.
- Batteries, tires and brakes cause most holiday breakdowns.
- Nobody inspects your car for you anymore. Texas dropped the annual safety inspection for most passenger cars in 2025.
- Photos, then a free estimate. Our techs send what they find straight to your phone before any work starts.
Quick answers
How long does a pre-trip car check take?
Usually under an hour. You can wait in our lobby or use our courtesy shuttle.
When should I book a pre-trip check before Thanksgiving?
About 5 to 7 days before you leave, so there is time to order a part if we find something.
What happens if you find a problem?
You get photos and a free estimate on your phone before any work starts. You decide what gets fixed now and what can wait.
Why holiday trips expose problems
A car that’s fine for the 15-minute run down Briar Forest Drive can struggle on a four-hour highway drive with a full load of people and luggage. Sustained highway speed heats the tires and brakes, the extra weight works the suspension, and a weak battery that barely starts the car on a warm afternoon can quit on the first cold morning of the trip.
Houston summers make it worse. Months of heat wear out batteries, dry out wiper blades and rubber hoses, and cook engine fluids, and the damage often shows up when the weather finally turns.
Nobody inspects your car for you anymore
Since January 1, 2025, Texas no longer requires an annual safety inspection for most non-commercial vehicles. Harris County still requires the emissions test, but no one is required to look at your brakes, tires, lights or wipers. Our earlier post explains what Briar Forest drivers still owe in 2026. If you can’t remember the last time someone looked under your car, a holiday trip is a good reason to have it done.
Our pre-trip check, point by point
- Tires and spare. Pressure, tread depth, sidewall damage, and the spare most people forget. Tire pressure drops about 1 psi for every 10°F the temperature falls, so a cold front can trigger your TPMS light on the way out of town.
- Battery and charging system. We load-test the battery and check the starter and alternator. Batteries that are three or more years old in Houston are living on borrowed time.
- Brakes. Pad thickness, rotor condition, brake fluid, and any pulling, grinding or soft pedal. See our brake and alignment service.
- Fluids. Oil, coolant, transmission, brake and washer fluid, checked for level and condition. Due for an oil change? Do it on the same visit.
- Belts and hoses. Cracks, glazing and soft spots the summer heat tends to leave behind. More on belts and hoses.
- Lights and wipers. Headlights, brake lights, turn signals and blades, which matter more on unfamiliar highways after dark.
- A/C, heat and defrost. You’ll want all three on a Texas November road trip. See A/C and heating service.
- Warning lights. If your check engine light is on, we’ll scan it and explain what it means in plain English before you leave.
What you can check in your driveway
- Walk around the car with the lights on and check every bulb.
- Check tire pressure cold, before you drive, against the sticker in the driver’s door jamb.
- Look at your wiper blades for cracking or streaking.
- Make sure your spare, jack and lug wrench are actually in the car.
- Pack a phone charger, water and a flashlight.
Everything else, including brakes, battery health, belts, hoses and fluids, is easier to judge with the car on a lift. Our digital inspection in 77077 shows you exactly what we see.
